Meet the plenary panelists at HCIM: Meggi Schuiling
Meggi Schuiling has a warm heart for the development of pediatric palliative care. As director of Director of Dutch Center of Expertise in Children’s Palliative Care, she is committed to improving the quality of life of sick children and their entire families. She sees an important role for CliniClowns in this. |
'I was born and raised in Germany, but love brought me to the Netherlands 20 years ago. Since 2013 I have been closely involved in the development of pediatric palliative care and since 2018 I am the director of Dutch Center of Expertise in Children’s Palliative Care. Our organization is the national point of contact for all questions and developments in the field of pediatric palliative care. We work very closely with the academic children's hospital, children’s hospices and day-care centers and all the other professionals involved who provide care for these children at home. My specialization is network care, complex care innovations and advocacy.'
'Creative teaching methods, art therapy and music play a major role in pediatric palliative care worldwide.'
Care for sick children primarily takes place at home
'Around 10000 seriously ill children are cared for and nursed at home in the Netherlands. Whoever comes home to these families often finds a small 'intensive care unit' in the house. One of the most important aspects of pediatric palliative care is anchored in ‘comfort care’, comfort-oriented care that promotes the quality of life of the sick child and the whole family. Creative teaching methods, art therapy and music play a major role in pediatric palliative care worldwide.'
CliniClowns should leave the hospital more
The CliniClowns have great expertise in this area. Therefore, they can play an important role in increasing the quality of life for the sick child, but also for brothers and sister. In my opinion the CliniClowns should leave the hospital more and act more where seriously ill children stay, namely at home, in children's hospitals and children's nursing care homes.”
'At HCIM I hope to bring some attention to the group of palliative children and young adults and also that I can contribute a bit to ensure that CliniClowns leave the hospital more often and visit seriously sick children in the places where they spend most of their time - at home, in children's hospices or elsewhere.'
Meggi will be one of the plenary panelists at HCIM. You can find more info about the other plenary panelists here.
